Growing Wheatgrass: Kid’s Projects

Growing grass is a simple thing that children will really enjoy. Not only is it fun to plant the seeds, but it’s even more fun to trim the grass once it’s grown!

Getting started (design a pot):

1)     Soak your wheatgrass seeds in water for 10-hours

2)     Drain and spread the seeds out on paper towel and allow them to  dry for 10-hours

3)     Time for the seeds: Place the dirt tablet in a small bowl.  Add 2-tablespoons of water to dirt and remove the dirt liner once it is damp.  Use a fork to loosen the dirt and place damp dirt into your critter pot.  You may need to put a bowl under your critter to help keep your counter surface dry and clean.

4)      Spread the seeds over the soil. The seeds should be touching each other but not overlapping (you may have extras – keep for future grass head)

5)     Push the seeds down slightly into the dirt but do not cover with dirt

6)     Water with a spray bottle… about 8 squirts 3-times a day (minimum) Keep DAMP but wet  seeds will mold if under water

7)     Keep a damp paper towel over the seeds until the grass starts to push up on the paper towel.  During this time you will still spray the seeds and the paper towel.

The Fun Part

Cut your critters hair once it grows to 6-8 inches… If you cut the hair UNDER 2-inches it may NOT grow back a 2nd time. Wheatgrass can grow up to 8 inches+ in only 11 days!

Why is grass green? Grass is green because it contains a pigment known as chlorophyll.  The intense green color of chlorophyll is due to its strong absorbencies in the red and blue regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and because of these absorbencies the light it reflects and transmits appears green.
